The Painted Veil is directed by John Curran and is based on the famous English writer Somerset Maugham's classic The Patterned Veil (1925), which was later re-released in Russia under the same title as the 2006 film. The film stars Naomi Watts and Edward Norton in the lead roles. The first film, The Painted Veil, was made in 1934. In this adaptation of the novel, the role of the main character Kitty Fane was played by the magnificent Greta Garbo.
The plot of the painting "The Painted Veil" takes place in the 20s of the 20th century. Young spoiled aristocratic Kitty, who dreams of quickly getting rid of her mother's excessive guardianship, meets a young scientist, W alter Fane, at one of the evenings organized by her father, a well-known lawyer. The doctor, who fell in love with a girl at first sight and received consent to marriage, takes his wife to Shanghai, where he plunges into work with his head. Kitty, never fond of her husband, has an affair with CharlieTownsend. However, the fact of treason is soon revealed. Disappointed in his marriage, W alter decides to go deep into China, to a small village where cholera is rampant. Kitty, hoping that her lover will divorce his wife for the sake of their love, is refused and forced to go with her husband.
Arriving in an almost abandoned settlement, whose inhabitants are dying one after another from a terrible disease, the doctor devotes all his time to fighting the disease, while his wife, abandoned by her beloved and disappointed in life, is bored within four walls. However, gradually the patterned cover, the painted veil of dreams flies from Kitty's eyes, love affairs and disappointments fade into the background when she sees her husband's dedication to his work helping sick people. Unexpectedly for herself, she opens it from a completely unfamiliar side. This is not that bore who completely devotes himself to the laboratory, experiments and treatment, this is a person respected by all the broadest soul, risking his life to save others. One day, going for a walk, Kitty discovers a shelter where nuns work and where children are looking forward to the arrival of her husband, who is able to support everyone with a kind word and deed, surrounding them with warmth and care. A feeling full of mutual respect and love flares up again between the spouses. At the end of the film "The Painted Veil", already an adult Kitty, who became a widow after the death of her husband from cholera, meets Charlie on the street. To the question of the son, whose exact biological paternity remains unknown: “Who is this?”-answers: "No one".
The film has wonderful music by A. Desplat, emphasizing the whole course of events. "The Painted Veil," whose trailer includes the highlights unfolding against the backdrop of a great melody, sets viewers in a certain mood, a slow flow of narrative that is by no means boring. After watching it, you will certainly have a desire to watch the entire movie.
