In fact, what Rammstein is playing is so-called dance metal. The term was created specifically after the release of their debut album. It was a typical EBM (Electronic Body Music), but with a heavier sound, guitars and cosmetic elements of industrial metal. Indeed, the work of the Ramstein group differed from the classical compositions of this genre in a lighter sound and focus on the general public.
However, before them there were bands that successfully mixed electronics with metal. Of those that quickly come to mind - Oomph! - German band most similar to Rammstein.
Oomph
They were formed before the "rams" - in 1989 against 1994. Their first album was all about electronic music. And on the second one, a heavier sound appeared, elements of industrial metal, provocative lyrics, but the sound was far from real "industrial", so they came up with Neue Deutsche Härte - "new German heaviness". Actually, "neue deutsche harte" anddance metal is the same thing, although the latter is mainly used by Rammstein himself in a joking manner.
The style and mood of music Oomph! and Rammstein are practically twins. There is some difference in the fact that "Rammstein" deliberately tries to create an image of a band that plays really heavy metal music. Oomph! same, in turn, does not forget about the "electronic" roots.
Creativity Oomph
The second Sperm and the third Defekt can be considered the "heaviest" of their albums. All the typical elements of the direction are here: electronic music with a dance beat and cosmetic decorations in the form of a heavy guitar sound and industrial elements. A separate point, which, in principle, can also be called a distinctive feature of the groups playing NDH, are provocative topics that are touched upon in the texts: violence, mental disorders, war, sex, and so on. Their clips - and in this the group is similar to "Rammstein" - almost all consist entirely of shock content, and they mostly refuse to play them on MTV.
The fourth album turned out to be neutral compared to the previous ones, because the band was just working out a contract with an old record label in order to quickly move on to a bigger one.
The fourth was not particularly memorable, except that its cover looks suspiciously like the cover of Rammstein's Mutter album, released three years later.
The fifth album, Plastik, was quite successful, but the sound on it has changed significantly towards more melodic and "sleek". In the future, allsubsequent albums continued to evolve in the same direction, further reducing the provocative themes in the lyrics.
Oomph! perform to this day. The last album was released in 2015, there is no information about the new one yet.
Ministry
If Oomph! play in directions that have more to do with electronic music, then among the real industrial there is another rock band similar to Rammstein.
Ministry began, oddly enough, with electronic music and synthpop. Then the sound got heavier and heavier, more guitars were added to the synthesizers, and finally, in 1988, The Land of Rape and Honey appeared - one of the standards of American industrial.
After that, several more albums are released in the same direction, only with a constant increase in the proportion of guitars in the overall sound. However, Ministry's most interesting point about how the band is similar to Rammstein is their Just One Fix from 1992's Psalm 69: the riff is strikingly reminiscent of the riff from Rammstein's Du Hast, found on their 2001 album Mutter.
Not plagiarism, but the extraordinary similarity of this, and not only this Ramstein composition (since their work is still not very rich in a variety of melodies), with the song for which the video was filmed, leads to certain reflections.
