Short biography

Charskaya Lidia Alekseevna was born on January 19, 1875 in Tsarskoye Selo. She was raised by her mother's sisters.

Then, at a young age, she graduated from the Pavlovsk Women's Institute (now gymnasium No. 209). Charskaya Lydia's impressions from her studies were so vivid that they were reflected in most of her works.

From the age of 15, the writer kept her personal diary, this is typical for many creative people. Most of it was kept by relatives. From these memories, the notes of the high school student Lydia Charskaya were born, which later grew into a book.

Much later, her son Yuri was born and this prompted Lydia to becomeactress. To this end, she graduated from college in St. Petersburg. The work brought a very small income, so the girl decided to publish her works.

In her writing, Lydia always put the moral education of the new generation in the first place. For example, she spoke out against corporal punishment of children and even wrote an article about it.

As a result, she devoted her whole life to creativity: she was a Russian children's writer and actress.

Writing activity

For 20 years of fruitful creative process, 80 stories, 20 fairy tales and 200 poems came out from under her hand. Although her books were very popular and were reprinted many times, she received almost no money for this.

Her works were banned, but still read and bought up, manuscripts were secretly transferred. In books, the line of kindness, hard fate, orphanhood has always been traced. Often these were rather banal cases, but they are described in a very interesting way. It was a pleasure to read the books of Charskaya Lilia Alekseevna … just in one breath …

Reviews and criticism

Chukovsky did not speak very well of her. Said she used worn images and words, none of this is new.

But Pasternak, on the contrary, considered it a success to become like her, to write also easily and clearly.

Critics pointed out that she used Russian incorrectly.

But the recognition of people and mass love did not leave her alone. A lot of people wrote to Charskaya Lydialetters, wanted to be like her. They liked the creativity and approach of the writer, school librarians advised the younger generation to read her books and "educate".

Marina Tsvetaeva was in awe of the writer's work and was so immersed in the life of the characters and their pain that she dedicated poems to them.

Many who spoke very unflatteringly about her at the time when this was accepted by the authorities, over the years admitted that they had read her books and were passionate about the work of such a talented writer.

The life of a girl at the institute and the reflection of the event in the works

In the characters of the books, the writer focused on their heightened sense of justice. All actions and mistakes were experienced by the characters very painfully, emotionally. Critics believed that all the characters suffered from hysteria.

Chukovsky, for example, notes the moment when a little cripple girl asks for forgiveness from another: how can one not love oneself in order to humiliate oneself and ask for forgiveness for atrocities with the words “You are a saint”. Viktor Rusakov wrote an unflattering comment about him after that, especially emphasizing that one must be very dishonest to write such a thing.

The beginning of "Notes of a little schoolgirl" is marked by the entry of the main character to the institute, where her mother sends her with tears and without desire. In this place, Lyuda is hard, everything around is unfriendly, non-native. But then she became friends with Nina (Georgian princess), and everything began to play with other colors. Their adventures are very detailed and interestingly described, adventures, relations between them at the institute. The girls really missed home and were planning a summer vacation: how they would go to Lyuda in Ukraine and then to Nina in the Caucasus. But Nina does not live to see the summer and dies of consumption. Luda is very painfully experiencing the death of a close and almost only friend.

Also, along the way, the life of the other girls from the institute is described very beautifully and in detail, how they are friends, worry, quarrel.

Then comes a description of the main character's anxieties and worries about the final exams, the ball and the future life outside the institute. Moreover, the wound after the death of her best friend is still fresh.

Lyudmila graduates with a gold medal, loses her mother and brother, the only native people in whom one could find support.

The whole action ends with a description of the new period: she begins to work as a governess in a rich Georgian family, with a prince, a relative of her friend Nina. Here she finds herself, her destiny and family: she becomes a mentor and friend of her late friend's second cousin.

The book is very touching and sad. It penetrates the very soul, makes you think.

Interesting fact

In the 20s after the revolution and the overthrow of the tsar, it was very embarrassing to hear that you were a college student, like Lydia Charskaya. It sounded very insulting, besides, they pointed the finger at the college girl.

As the years passed, her work became popular, and the phrase lost its offensive meaning.
