But once again, while picking up records for a party, I stumbled upon a play that was performed by Duke Ellington's orchestra, famous in the USA and Europe. The young musician was stunned. After that, he got acquainted with the work of Louis Armstrong.
Jazz made a strong impression on Oleg and his fellow musicians. They began to perform this music at dances. Oleg Lundstrem reproduced arrangements from records by ear. YoungThe musicians decided to organize a jazz orchestra. Oleg Lundstrem was chosen for the position of the head. At first, the repertoire included foreign compositions. Over time, the leader began to make jazz arrangements for Russian songs. In 1947, all the musicians of the orchestra come to the Soviet Union. History of the creation of the orchestra
As mentioned above, Oleg Lundstrem led the orchestra in 1934. Then it consisted of 9 musicians, including the leader. A year later, the orchestra won great popularity in Harbin. In 1936 the musicians moved to Shanghai. Here they had great success. After the war, there were 19 musicians - a complete big band was formed. Then Oleg Leonidovich decides to try himself as a composer.
The first piece he wrote is called Interlude. The music of Oleg Lundstrem was based on the intonations of S. Rachmaninov. The next work he wrote was the play "Mirages". Since all the musicians of the orchestra were Soviet people, in 1947 they moved to the USSR with their families. The city of Kazan was chosen due to the presence of a conservatory in it. Musicians were eager to get an education. They expected that their team would be made the state jazz orchestra of the Tatar ASSR. But this did not happen. The Central Committee of the CPSU announcedthat the Soviet people do not need jazz.
Musicians were assigned to different orchestras of the city. Oleg Lundstrem himself received a position as a violinist at the Opera and Ballet Theatre. The artistic director of the Philharmonic organized occasional jazz concerts. This gave O. Lundstrem's orchestra a chance not to fall apart. The concert program included Soviet and Tatar songs.
