The Lunacharsky Theater (Sevastopol) has existed since the beginning of the 20th century. Residents of the city were looking forward to this event with great impatience. Before that, there was only a summer theater in the city, and the audience was deprived of the opportunity to attend performances in the winter.

History of the theater

For a long time, the city of Sevastopol did not have its own stationary troupe. The Lunacharsky Theater was opened in 1911. Then it was called differently. It was the Renaissance Bolshoi Art Theatre. It is located on Primorsky Boulevard. At first, performances were shown on the stage of the theater by artists who came on tour. A little later, a troupe appeared. It was headed by A. S. Nikulichev.

In 1920, the Revolutionary Committee seized power in the city. The department of public education was then headed by the opera singer L. V. Sobinov. It was on his initiative that the theater was named after A. V. Lunacharsky and the name "Renaissance" was abolished.

From 1925 to 1927, an invited Moscow troupe worked here, thanks to which the theater's repertoire was enriched with interesting productions.

Since 1935, for 20 years, the main director was B. A. Bertels. With his appearancetheater has reached a new stage. B. Bertels was one of the best directors in the country.

During the war, the artists created a brigade that gave performances on the front lines. The A. V. Lunacharsky Theater gave more than a thousand front-line concerts. Many young actors went to the front. Few of them returned. Streets are named in memory of them in Sevastopol. During the war, the theater building was destroyed by a Nazi bomb.

Since 1945, artists have given performances in the building of the former Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. In 1957, the theater got a new building, where it is located to this day. The auditorium here is designed for 670 seats. The building was built according to the project of the architect VV Pilevin. The first production staged in the new building was Vsevolod Vishnevsky's play Optimistic Tragedy.

In 2002, the Lunacharsky Theater (Sevastopol) received academic status. A photo of the building is presented in this article.
