General information
Every year more than 100 thousand people visit this local history museum. It has magnificent exhibition halls, of which there are 17 today.

How did it all start?
The Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore, established in 1926 under the Society for the Study of the Murmansk Territory, is one of the oldest in the region.
It all started with a tiny wooden house on Leningradskaya Street, which housed five hundred exhibits. They were prepared by the director of the biological Murmansk station, Professor G. A. Kluge, together with his colleagues, Professor A. A. Polkanov and the agronomist I. G. Eichfeld. They represented, respectively, marine fauna, minerals and plants.

Exhibits of the modern museum are located in a completely new room - a bright large building on Lenin Avenue. This building is a historical monument of the Murmansk region, built in 1937 as a typical secondary school. Subsequently, in 1941, a hospital was placed here.
Since 1957, the first expositions have appeared here. Today, the museum's funds contain about 140 thousand items in storage, including 25 thousand on display.
Since 1965, a mosaic panel appeared on the front side of the building, and an anchor on the pedestal, as a monument to the 1st in the worldicebreaker called "Ermak".

Against the backdrop of an excellent panorama of the northern forest, you can see bear cubs with a she-bear and a calf with a moose-calf on the forest edge. Also, everyone who has visited the halls of the museum can be convinced that the tundra, despite its harsh conditions, is a place where rare and amazing plants grow. There are also flowers "living" under the snow.
The tundra is the habitat of many birds (for example, the Arctic tern - the world record holder for the distance of flights) and the home of the deer. The exposition also presents amazing inhabitants of the depths of the Barents Sea.

Traditional occupations of people living in the Kola North go back centuries. These are fishing, reindeer herding and hunting. The first historically known peoples who once inhabited the Kola Peninsula in ancient times are the Saami. To find out how they looked and how they lived, you need to visit the department of archeology, which presents a rare exhibit - a sculptural portrait of an ancient man, reconstructed by anthropologist M. M. Gerasimov.
As far back as 1556, on the sandbar of the Kola Bay, the city of Kola was built, which was the most important fishing and administrative center of this region. Then it became the first trading port, a border outpost in the North of Russia.
The Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore helps to expand the knowledge of young people and schoolchildren about the development of their native land and contributes to the emergence of a feeling of love for their homeland.
