This film is considered one of the best works of director Yu. Bykov along with such his films as "Major" and "To Live". He manages to shoot very compelling dramas. No wonder the film "The Fool" in 2014 received a prize for the screenplay and a diploma from the Guild of Film Critics and Critics at Kinotavr.

This picture is about how the world looks like, in which everyone is indifferent to other people's troubles. And those who want to change at least something will definitely hear after: "What a fool!"

How is the plot structured? And who are the actors of the movie "Fool"?

Storyline

All events take place within one night. Dmitry Nikitin - an ordinary plumber - quietly dine with his family. Suddenly he is called to work: a breakdown of the sewer in one of the hostels of the city. He notices two huge cracks in the building's load-bearing walls and realizes that it has tilted and won't last more than a day. Nikitin decides to urgently report this to the mayor of the city of Galaganova, who is celebrating her anniversary at this time, at which all the mainofficials. Both his wife and parents want to stop him, pointing out both the senselessness and the danger of this undertaking. But the conscientious Nikitin cannot give up on the lives of living people, even though they are completely strangers to him. Moreover, almost all the residents of that hostel are drunkards or drug addicts. Nevertheless, Nikitin believes that as soon as the authorities find out about the problem, they will help people.

At an emergency meeting of the city council, the fate of 800 residents of that hostel is decided. If an evacuation is announced, then they need to be resettled somewhere, and, of course, there are no options. First, they begin to look for the last one, on whom responsibility can be blamed, but the stigma is in the cannon at the entire top. Therefore, Galaganova goes to extreme measures and orders to kill Fedotov and Matyugin, in order to later hang all the dogs on them and thereby save her own skin. Next to them is Nikitin, but he is released with a threat to remove him if he urgently does not leave the city forever. He takes his wife and son, puts them in a car, and they try to flee. But on the way, Nikitin sees that, contrary to the mayor's assurances, no one is evacuating people. He quarrels with his wife, insisting that she leave alone with her son, while he himself remains. He runs to the hostel to wake up the tenants and take them out of the building. But the brutal crowd, instead of gratitude, kicked him with their feet. Bykov's film "Fool" ends with this scene.

Idea painting

The director poses a difficult task for the viewer: to decide for himself what is more important - the well-being of his family or the life of 820 strangers. Moreover, such people are usually called the dregs of society. Amongthey are alcoholics, former prisoners, drug addicts. Is it worth risking your life for them? The unfortunate dormitory contingent is deliberately shown by the director from the worst side, so that not a drop of sympathy arises for them. Therefore, the behavior of Nikitin, who actually goes to his death for their sake, seems all the more unjustified. And then he dies at their own hands. But through his mouth, the director voices the main message of his work: "We live like pigs and die like pigs, because we are nobody to each other." It was his response to his wife's desperate cry that he owed nothing to those people.

Protagonist Dmitry Nikitin

He was played by Artem Bystrov. Films with his participation have not yet been as popular as this one. He was the best fit for the image of a decent and conscientious plumber, who always tries to act humanely thanks to his upbringing. Dmitry is just as truthful as his father. He has an honest and open face, he is slightly naive, because he believes that he can break the system. It seems that Nikitin has iron nerves, he more or less calmly reacts to what is happening even in critical situations, and therefore is able to think sensibly. But until the end, his image is revealed in the final scenes. Even his steel endurance dries up during a quarrel with his wife, he drives her away, because she does not understand his honesty and compassion. Also on the roof of the ill-fated building, when Dmitry, wet and out of breath from running around, realizes that he has notified all the residents about the danger, and they managed to get out from the inside, tears of joy begin to flow from his eyes. This is the only moment in the whole moviewhen the main character is happy. He fulfilled his moral duty, his conscience will not torment him.

Galaganova - mayor of the city

She was played by Natalia Surkova, best known for her lead role in The Master and Margarita. She has over 40 films to her credit.

Costumers and make-up artists adjusted her appearance to the image of a typical official. Natalya Surkova, although older than her heroine in her passport, looks younger in real life. And Galaganova just turned 50. For more than 20 years she has been holding the reins of power. Nikitin arrives at the anniversary celebrations at the moment when they raise another toast to her he alth and sing praises about her concern for the city, they say, people even call her mother behind her back.

She creates the first impression of herself as a person who occupies such a post for good reason: she knows how to lead, as well as think sensibly. She is a domineering woman, in a commanding tone she can lay siege to those who object. She orders to bring half-drunk officials to their senses and organizes a closed meeting right in the restaurant. From her monologue about where the money from the city budget goes, it is clear that she knows about the dark deeds of her associates, and she herself is involved in them. At first it seems that she is not indifferent to the fate of those people, but later it turns out that she is afraid not that the house will collapse, but that heads will roll, and they can make her guilty. At best, she will be removed from her post, and at worst, she will be imprisoned. At first, Galaganova made an attempt to obtain temporary housing, but it turned out to beunsuccessful. Her skin is more expensive, therefore, under pressure, she gives tacit consent to the removal of two bosses, and then - all the ends are in the water. The role of Galaganova is very emotional. Natalya Surkova perfectly managed to convey the firmness, charisma, and cynicism of her heroine.

Bogachev

Yuri Tsurilo has played about 70 roles in his entire acting career, most of them negative. Appearance obliges, or something …

The film "Fool" was no exception. Yuri Tsurilo plays here the unprincipled and hypocritical official Bogachev, who goes over the heads to achieve his goals. Here, for him, a human life is not worth a penny, and this applies not only to the residents of the hostel, but also to his own associates, with whom he worked together for years. Those with whom he just sat at the same table, he sends to death without any hesitation.

The actors of the film "Fool": Boris Nevzorov as Fedotov

With Bykov they already worked together in the film "Major", filmed a year earlier. He usually plays positive characters, his role is people in uniform, for example, valiant police officers.

But a completely different role was prepared for him by the film "The Fool". Boris Nevzorov reincarnated as a negligent, cynical and corrupt boss. Even when Nikitin scientifically proves to him that the building has only a few hours left to stand, he objects that subsidence of the ground in the fall is normal, and panic is unnecessary here. And about the residentsin the hostel, he says: "Are these really people? These are scum: every second has a criminal record. Maybe they need to go to the next world." Only when he, Matyugin and Nikitin are taken to be shot, does he show humanity and stand up for the guy, asking him to release the innocent plumber.

Dima's father

Alexander Korshunov usually gets supporting roles. Also here the actor plays the father of the protagonist. He is an honest hard worker, the same "fool" as his son. He works at work, but does not wipe his pants, does not drag home everything that lies badly, like the rest. In my 60 years I have not amassed anything, I have not accumulated anything. Someone steals light bulbs in the entrance, and he screws it in, someone breaks a shop near the house, and he and Dima repair it. But he has no friends, even his own wife does not consider him a man. But he deserves the respect of the viewer. Alexander Korshunov plays such an uncompromising and decent person.

Dima's mother

She was played by Olga Samoshina. The role is not easy, but the actress succeeded. All monologues had to be spoken in anguish or just screamed. Olga Samoshina is a rather oversized lady, but here she is dressed in a terrible brown jacket of a huge size, which, according to the director's idea, was supposed to emphasize the wretchedness of the life of the Nikitin family. Dima's mother is a greedy and grumpy woman who cannot say a kind word. For her, the main thing is to live like everyone else, no matter at what cost. Even at dinner, she grumbles and reproaches her son for his inability to survive in this world. At the end of the picture, he even gives him a slap in the face for beingreturned to save people.

Other actors of the movie "Fool"

Nikitin's wife was played by Daria Moroz. The image of her heroine is developing quite dynamically: in the mother-in-law's house she is a silent daughter-in-law, and in the car she shows her real face. Although, on the other hand, she is simply not as naive as her husband, and understands how his amateur activities can end badly for their family.

Kirill Polukhin got the role of fire chief Matyugin. Maksim Pinsker played the head of Sayapin's police department, Lyubov Rudenko played Galaganova's secretary Razumikhina.

Elena Panova and Dmitry Kulichkov played an unreliable married couple from a hostel. An alcoholic husband constantly beats his wife, and she swears at him.

By the way, almost all the actors of the film "The Fool" are Honored Artists of Russia.

Allegory or reality

You can say "Based on a true story" on a movie poster and it's true. Situations such or similar are a dime a dozen. Some viewers saw something more in the plot that the director wanted to convey. Like, the hostel is the entire post-Soviet space, and the example of the top of this nameless city shows the collapse of the country as a whole. People like Nikitin can be counted on the fingers. But the majority thinks in much the same way as Dmitry's wife or mother.

Movie title

Nikitin's position in life is the subject of most controversy after viewing. Although everyone admires his fearlessness and self-sacrifice, many viewers who have watched Bykov's film "The Fool" do not hidethat they themselves would hardly have done the same. Why? Yes, because the modern egoistic society is not worthy of it, and no one will appreciate it, or even worse - they will kick you.

Film Bykov the Fool
Film Bykov the Fool

Someone even sees parallels with Dostoevsky's "The Idiot", where it is shown that a decent and honest person is considered a holy fool. In the film, Nikitin is called a fool ten times - and his own mother, and wife, and policemen, and residents of the same hostel. So the director wanted to emphasize how the collective consciousness stigmatizes those who stand head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to decency. Unfortunately, such people are not admired, they are not set as an example, but on the contrary, they are insulted, calling them fools. Their behavior is considered unacceptable and abnormal, to the point of being imbecile.

Although most would agree that everyone would like to live in a country of "fools" like Nikitin.
