The government decided to take advantage of James' persuasion skills and sent him to Berlin on an unofficial mission to negotiate a prisoner exchange.

Principled, uncompromising, with a sparkling humor, able to be unshakable even in the most stressful situations - all the qualities that the real prototype of the character possessed, and Hanks brilliantly managed to convey this in the film "Bridge of Spies".
