Prostakov Mitrofan Terentyevich - the protagonist of the comedy "Undergrowth". Fonvizin D. I. tells about the only son of the Prostakov landowners, whose development stalled at the stage of studying arithmetic and literacy for four years. A lazy, arrogant, cruel and stupid sissy, besides an ignoramus, is not against marrying a rich bride, who is much smarter, more decent and more literate than him.
The reader finds himself in the village of the landowners Prostakov, from where Denis Ivanovich Fonvizin begins his story. “Undergrowth” (a brief summary of the comedy) tells at first about the fitting of a mother for her son with a caftan sewn by the serf Trishka. The robe is not enough, the servant makes excuses.
Renewal is sewn for the rite of conspiracy between Skotinin (Prostakova's brother) and the orphan Sophia, a pupil of the landowners. When the girl's father died, they decided to "look after" the estate left to her. At the same time, the bride does not even suggest such a development of events. Her onlya relative, Uncle Starodum, who could protect her from such arbitrariness, no one knows where he is, and cannot help. Thus, intriguing the reader, Fonvizin begins "Undergrowth". The summary tells that the uncle nevertheless found Sophia, and on the eve of the matchmaking she receives a letter from him.
Prostakova is annoyed by this event, as she did not expect Starodum to be alive. In the message, the uncle informs Sophia that he will bequeath to her all his property, which brings a lot of income. This fact led to the firm decision of the landowner to marry the girl of her son Mitrofanushka - an undersized one. Fonvizin shows not only Prostakova's thirst for money, but also her ignorance. After all, she could not study the contents of the letter, because she cannot read.
Skotinin, who wants to take possession of her property, also has his plans for a rich heiress. However, he does not know about his sister's idea.
Did Fonvizin marry an undergrowth with an orphan? The summary continues with the appearance of new characters. A company of soldiers led by officer Milon follows through the estate, who unexpectedly meets his friend Pravdin. He is a member of the governor's committee and talks about malicious ignoramuses in the person of the Prostakovs, who mistreat people.
What twists of fate did Denis Ivanovich Fonvizin prepare for the heroes? "Undergrowth" (a summary of the comedy) surprises further with a pleasant turn of events. From Pravdin, Milon learns about the venture of the greedy Prostakova. It turns out that the officer and Sophia have long beenare in love with each other, and he has been looking for her for about a year.
Suddenly, the lovers meet, they are filled with a sense of joy. Sophia announces the upcoming wedding, and Milon becomes jealous of her. When he learned more about his rival, he calmed down. And, having met Mitrofanushka, the officer sees how insignificant his essence is. The teachers of the sissy, Tsyfirkin and Kuteikin, also speak about this, explaining his ignorance by the unwillingness to learn.
With the arrival of Starodub, the action of the comedy Fonvizin continued. "Undergrowth" (summary) tells that before meeting with the landowners, Sophia's uncle talks with Pravdin and praises the times of Peter the Great. Their conversation is interrupted by Prostakova and Skotinin, who are fighting. Milon at this time is trying to separate them. Recognizing Starodub in the stranger, the landowner calms down and begins to please him in order to arrange a planned wedding.
But the uncle promises to take away and marry Sofya to a certain young man the very next day. This plunges the girl into despair, then Starodub gives her the right to choose a groom herself, returning hope to her niece.
Prostakova praises Mitrofanushka, telling how smart he is and how much she pays his teachers. Teachers are sad, because in fact the process of obtaining knowledge cannot be called successful. To her request to demonstrate his knowledge, the son declares that he does not want to study, but wants to get married.
Milon asks Starodub for Sophia's hand, and he happily agrees when he sees a worthy groom. DeniedProstakova and Skotinin in their intentions to come to an agreement with Sophia, the uncle informs them of their departure the next morning. But the lady is not going to give up her plan.
How did Fonvizin finish "Undergrowth"? The summary tells that Prostakova is forcibly trying to drag Sophia into a carriage in order to take her away and marry her son. Milo releases his bride, the kidnapper repents, and she is forgiven. Pravdin, by decree of the government, takes custody of the house and village of the Prostakovs. Skotinin leaves, the teachers are dismissed, Mitrofan is sent to serve.
