He adopts several of Rize's characteristics - the power of regeneration, the left eye of a ghoul, and the inability to digest human food. Until he meets the rest of the ghouls in the cafe, he considers them cruel and inhuman creatures. Despite Kaneki having taken on the form of a ghoul earlier, Haise finds himself unable to handle it. He is disgusted by the second side of his essence, although he makes attempts to accept himself for who he is.

Sasaki wants to get to know himself from the inside in order to regain previously lost memories. However, he fears that as a result he will lose his current friends and memories of them already.

During the final battle that takes place in Tsukiyama's headquarters, the protagonist manages to regain his memory and lost identity. He finally remembers everything that happened to him.
