History of the theater
The Mossovet Theater opened its doors in 1923. It was created by director S. I. Prokofiev. From 1925 to 1940 he directed the theater of E. O. Lyubimov-Lanskaya.
After him, until 1977, the troupe was headed by a student of E. Vakhtangov and K. Stanislavsky - actor and director Yuri Zavadsky. He invited famous artists to work with him: Faina Ranevskaya, Georgy Zhzhenov, Rostislav Plyatt, Mikhail Kozakov, Lyubov Orlova and others.
The Moscow City Council Theater received academic status in 1964.
Pavel Osipovich Chomsky became the chief director and then artistic director in 1985. He preserved traditions, but at the same time he was looking for new forms and ways of working.
He opened a small stage, which was intended for experimental performances. The first performance played on it was Caligula. Oleg Menshikov played the main role in it.
Since that time, the Moscow City Council Theater has had two stages. The hall opened by P. Chomsky wears todayname "Under the Roof", it is designed for 120 spectators, and the main one - for 894 seats.
Today the troupe often goes on tour to other cities in Russia and abroad. The artists have traveled to France, Poland, the USA, Finland, Bulgaria, etc.
In the repertoire of the 2015-2016 season. includes 25 productions of different genres that are interesting for viewers of all ages.
