In a valley closed by mountains, a small town is dying. Everyone tries to survive in their own way: keep sheep or store. Two friends work part-time on small assignments, but one day they decide to leave in search of a better life. On the way, they find a dead man, inform the police, and set off again. However, the only road is littered, and an incomprehensible monster is chasing them.

Friends Val (Kevin Bacon) and Earl (Fred Ward) manage to get to the store and inform the residents about a huge worm underground. There is no way to ask the authorities for help by phone, and the frightened heroes go to the neighboring town on horseback. But they are being chased by an underground worm that crashes against the concrete wall of the trench.

Lovely student Rhonda (Finn Carter), who worked nearby with seismic instruments, reports three more such creatures in the valley. All residents of the town, a retired colonel (Michael Gross) with his wife (Reeba McIntyre), Nancy (Charlotte Stewart) with her daughter (Ariana Richards), the boy Melvin (Robert Jane), as well as Earl and Val escape on a tractor and a heavy trailer, trying get to the path in the mountains, which is the only escape from the terrible trap. But the graboids set a trap, and the fugitives had to climb onto the boulders. Together they figured out how to destroy the monsters.

After returning, the author did not immediately start work. Even when the script was already written and the casting was underway, Wilson did not perceive the idea itself as something important. The frivolous attitude was transferred to the entire set. That is why the film came out easy to watch, fresh and even kind.
